Radio Recap: A Nation Mourns

Our nation mourns as more than 30 lives are lost in two mass shootings in one weekend. It is a time to mourn. But it’s also a time to think. And ultimately, it’s a time for action.

Today on our broadcast, we discussed the horrific shootings in El Paso, TX and Dayton, OH in less than 24 hours this past weekend. And these tragedies right on the heels of last week’s shooting at a festival in California where three innocent victims were killed, including a 6-year-old child.

President Trump addressed the nation this morning, expressing our nation’s grief and offering prayer and support for the victims and their families.

“This morning our nation is overcome with shock, horror, and sorrow. This weekend more than 80 people were killed or wounded in two evil attacks . . . . The first lady and I join all Americans in praying and grieving for the victims, their families, and the survivors. We will stand by their side forever. We will never forget. These barbaric slaughters are an assault upon our communities, an attack upon our nation, and a crime against all of humanity. We are outraged and sickened by this monstrous evil, the cruelty, the hatred, the malice, the bloodshed, and the terror.

Our hearts are shattered for every family whose parents, children, husbands and wives were ripped from their arms and their lives. America weeps for the fallen. We are a loving nation, and our children are entitled to grow up in a just, peaceful, and loving society. Together we lock arms to shoulder the grief. We ask God in Heaven to ease the anguish of those who suffer, and we vow to act with urgent resolve.”

We know in the El Paso incident, the issue of White Nationalism was at play, and the President also addressed this, vehemently condemning that hatred, racism, and bigotry altogether, reminding the world that it has “no place in America.”

“In one voice, our nation must condemn racism, bigotry, and white supremacy. These sinister ideologies must be defeated. Hate has no place in America. Hatred warps the mind, ravages the heart, and devours the soul.”

The President stated he has directed the DOJ and FBI to provide “any and all assistance” that is needed in this time of tragedy. President Trump also called for action, stating that he has ordered the FBI to identify all further resources they need to identify and disrupt all hate crimes and domestic terrorism.

Americans have to come together to combat this hate and violence. Especially our schools, which need to be made more secure. Our kids are preparing to go back to school in the coming days and weeks across the country, and their classrooms are just not safe. We must demand action. Once caller suggested placing veterans in the schools to act as security.

As the President stated, we must reform our  mental health laws "to better identify mentally disturbed individuals who may commit acts of violence.” Mental health is a difficult issue, but it’s one we should all be able to agree on. I am pro 2nd Amendment and a gun owner myself, and I believe there are things we can do. But the kneejerk reaction of the extreme Left that we must take away everyone’s guns is not the answer.

We should all agree we need to keep guns way from those who pose a threat.

We don’t know the solution yet, but we must have these difficult discussions. Take all the politics out of it, Right vs. Left, and have the real conversation. We must think of our children. We owe them our protection and safety.
