Chaos Erupts in DC., Pres. Trump calls for “Orderly Transition on Jan. 20” (Sekulow Recap)

Chaos erupted yesterday in our nation’s Capitol.

Today on Sekulow, we discussed yesterday’s unacceptable events in Washington, DC and how President Trump has now called for an “orderly transition” on January 20th.

The riots, violence, and vandalization of the U.S. Capitol yesterday was despicable. It was illegal, and it hindered the chambers from conducting their constitutionally mandated duty. That is unacceptable in our constitutional republic.

Ultimately the events led to a much later Electoral College certification process. The end result of that certification went pretty much the way they expected. There were some challenges but only two due to the lateness of the hour and the delay caused by the rioting at the Capitol. Arizona was the first state challenged and then once that started, the rioting began.

There is a difference between rioting and civil disobedience. We at the ACLJ during our long history have actually defended civil disobedience and pro-life protestors. Civil disobedience would be if you’re blocking the door, streets, and the like. You get arrested. Civil disobedience is not vandalism. It is not violence.

What is so unfortunate, because this was not civil disobedience or a normal Washington protest, is that a veteran who served our country is now dead. She was shot as she tried to enter the Capitol.

You cannot just barge onto the floor of the Senate. You can’t just walk onto the floor of the House. You can visit. You can get passes and go through the normal process.  Or at least, you could. Now, after these events, we don’t even know if and when visitors will be allowed again. There will be more restrictions put in place because of bad actors. They do not represent the majority of President Trump’s supporters.

We were joined on the show by ACLJ Senior Advisor for National Security and Foreign Policy Ric Grenell. Ric talked about how conservatives have condemned both the rioting that happened yesterday and over the summer:

I think we need to go back to last summer when a lot of the violence in Portland and Seattle – we were told it was peaceful protesting but we could see with our own eyes that it was looting and that it was destruction and violence. They started attacking parks and statues; really going after small businesses. When this happened there was an unequivocal call from the conservatives that violence is not the answer and that we should call out Black Lives Matter and Antifa for not being clear enough with their people in the protesting that were immediately moving from protesting into violence. We did not see that call from the Left. You can go back and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris was trying to raise money in order to get people out of prison that have just been looting and doing these things. She said it would continue. President-elect Biden was not that clear about Antifa and the Black Lives Matter movements where individuals within those protests immediately started looting.

I was proud yesterday to see unequivocally all of the conservatives immediately rush to say violence is never the answer. It was a very sad day to watch that. We can never resort to violence. Protesting is appropriate.

After the Elector College was certified last night, President Trump issued a statement pledging a peaceful transition of power.

We mourn what happened in DC yesterday. We need to pray. Please join us in praying for our country and our nation’s leaders. We need God’s mighty hand to come in and heal our nation’s wounds.
