Attorney General Bill Barr testified before the House Judiciary Committee today.
On today’s Jay Sekulow Live, we discussed Attorney General Barr’s testimony before the House Judiciary Committee. His opening statement cited “grave abuses involved in the bogus ‘Russiagate’ scandal.”
As we went live on the air, Attorney General Barr was testifying before the House Judiciary Committee. He was testifying about Department of Justice decisions in combating the violent riots that we have seen across the country, and are still ongoing.
It’s called a hearing on oversight of the Department of Justice. And of course, Russiagate was mentioned. The hearing actually got off to a late start because Chairman Nadler was involved in a car accident. He was not injured, but he was delayed, and opening comments were cut short as a result.
Attorney General Barr read from a powerful prepared statement, which is now part of the record:
Ever since I made it clear that I was going to do everything I could to get to the bottom of the grave abuses involved in the bogus “Russiagate” scandal, many of the Democrats on this Committee have attempted to discredit me by conjuring up a narrative that I am simply the President’s factotum who disposes of criminal cases according to his instructions. Judging from the letter inviting me to this hearing, that appears to be your agenda today.
This is very strong language from the Attorney General of the United States.
There was a very different tone and very different questions from the members of the committee to Attorney General Barr, which split along partisan lines.
ACLJ Director of Government Affairs Thann Bennett gave his analysis when he said:
The Attorney General turned the tables on them, plain and simple. Obviously the narrative from Chairman Nadler, not just today but leading up to the hearing, really for the last couple of years, has been that the Attorney General has been nothing but a political pawn in the President’s hand. He not only refuted that very specifically, but he actually turned the tables and said the importance of keeping political pressure out of the Department of Justice that is important on both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue, not only from the White House but also from Capitol Hill. Where he has felt the pressure is Capitol Hill.
