Immigration

After nearly six months of avoiding it like the plague, Vice President Kamala Harris finally went to the southern border. On June 25th, instead of going to the epicenter of the crisis, she visited an El Paso border facility where the atmosphere was quiet and calm. Not far from there, in the Rio Grande Valley, there’s a different story to be told. In fact, according to Customs and Border Protection, nearly 30,000 more undocumented immigrants were encountered in the Rio Grande Valley than in El Paso during the month of May alone.

Overall, in the short time since a new Administration moved into the White House, Customs and Border Protection have encountered nearly one-million undocumented immigrants at the southern border. The exact number is 711,784. Staggering, isn’t it? Among the mass exodus: convicted sex offenders, men wanted for murder, drug smugglers, gang members, and terrorists. But perhaps most disturbing is that in the midst of these dangerous criminals, there are defenseless children wandering the desert alone, sobbing and desperate for help.

Toddlers are being tossed over the border wall, ripped from one life and thrown into another with zero familiarity. They often come with no belongings, no family and sometimes no name. I call these kids “the forgotten,” because it seems this is exactly what Vice President Kamala Harris has done – turned her back and treated them like an afterthought.

Even after her photo-op in El Paso, we still haven’t heard any concrete policies or ideas as to how the Biden Administration actually plans to combat this nightmare. The Vice President touted “extreme progress” in tackling the migrant surge, but numbers don’t lie.

It’s been 91 days since VP Harris was chosen to lead the Biden Administration’s efforts in addressing the border crisis. As we’ve reported, her severe delusion and denial of what’s happening sent her office into panic mode recently; so they “limited her involvement,” which quite frankly seems impossible since she wasn’t doing anything anyway.

She HAS held meetings with leaders throughout the Northern Triangle to address the “root causes” of the border crisis. However, given that she claims that one of the root causes of illegal immigration is “climate” change, it’s difficult to take those meetings seriously.

One of the first things Kamala Harris should have done after being sworn in as Vice President was go to the U.S.-Mexico border. In April, while being questioned by reporters in New Hampshire, the Vice President gave her excuse as to why she wouldn’t be visiting.

A local reporter with an ABC affiliate asked:

“Republicans are attacking you, saying you shouldn’t be in New Hampshire talking about infrastructure, you should be at the southern border talking about immigration. How do you respond to that?”

VP Harris dismissed the reporter’s question, replying: “I’m not going to play political games.”

Political games? But Madame Vice President, isn’t that exactly what you’ve been doing?

Truthfully, this isn’t about focusing on the past, even though border encounters have risen consistently since the Biden Administration moved into the White House.  We must care about what’s happening right now, and the fact of the matter is neither Joe Biden nor Kamala Harris have made any significant attempts to turn this nightmare around. It’s been much easier for them to pretend the fallout doesn’t exist.

At the ACLJ, we’re taking significant action to get this crisis under control and restore order at the border. After mounting frustration with the Biden Administration over their lackadaisical approach to a solution, we filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request demanding all records, communications, or briefings communicated to or by U.S. Department of Homeland Security (“DHS”) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, his aides, staff, agents, or representatives, or any CBP, ICE, or USCIS official, pertaining to the Administration’s insistence that the present migrant surge at the southern border is a “challenge” and not a “crisis.”

Unsurprisingly, just like it has ignored the actual crisis at the border, the Biden Administration ignored our FOIA request; so we filed a lawsuit. We will get to the bottom of this.

The Biden Administration may be sticking its collective head in the sand, but we are calling this situation at the border exactly what it is – a humanitarian crisis – and we are taking action to end it before it’s too late. We will not give up until we see real progress made to stem the tide of illegal border crossings and keep these innocent children out of harm’s way.
