Last December the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) dramatically increased its hypocritical, vile, and targeted attack against Israel by passing UNSC Resolution 2334. This resolution preposterously insists that Jewish settlements, including the Jewish Quarter in Jerusalem are occupied territory and, therefore, are barriers to peace.

This action by the United Nation (U.N.) ignores human history and multiplies the cowardly betrayal of its own charter by providing diplomatic cover for genocidal aggression incited by terrorist groups such as Hamas and Fatah. Consequently, U.N. related entities such as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) have been unleashed as part of a vile and sustained attack on Israel’s legitimacy. They have declared open season on the only democracy in the Middle East.

This is absurd.

This absurdity consists of a cascade of anti-Israel resolutions that include (1) the May 2017 vote by the 58-member UNESCO Executive Board, which gathered in Paris on Israel’s birthday to approve a resolution disavowing Israeli sovereignty in Jerusalem; (2) the shameful discussion by the U.N. Human Rights Council in June 2017, which met to discuss Agenda Item 7 in order to criticize Israel for alleged human rights violations while ignoring the brutal atrocities practiced by Syria, Lebanon, and Hamas; (3) a July 2017 decision by UNESCO attacking Israeli archeological excavations in Jerusalem’s Old City as the work of an occupying power, while ignoring the savagery practiced by ISIS, including its destruction of the al-Nuri mosque in Mosul; and (4) another July 2017 decision by UNESCO in Krakow, Poland extending its ruthless assault on Israel and human history by insisting that the monuments in the city of Hebron, a city with a virtually continuous Jewish presence since the time of King David, should be registered to the state of Palestine. The manifest absurdity of this assault collides with this undeniable truth: the state of “Palestine” does not exist.

Preferring to remain oblivious to thousands of years of human history, the truth including the truth of the holocaust, and capitulating to stunning levels of cravenness abets Arab leaders’ efforts to focus the ire and the legitimate grievances of their people on Israel rather than their own misrule. To be fair, the move to de-legitimize Israel has attracted significant support from Western countries that are perhaps ashamed of their own history. This paves the way for Western countries to surrender to emotivism expressed in the language of grievance and alleged victimhood. Consistent with this impetus, the Obama Administration betrayed Israel by joining with the permanent virulently anti-Israel caucus at the United Nations and refusing to veto UNSC Resolution 2334.

Whatever its source or its motivation, this tsunami of resolutions places Israel and Israeli history in its cross-hairs.  Taken together, these U.N. resolutions—properly understood as nothing less than barbarism led by elites with smartphones and designer suits—pose an existential threat to the most tolerant country in the Middle East. Rather than exalting Israel’s consistent record of protecting human rights, U.N. related groups prefer to engage in conduct that signifies the triumph of barbarous pusillanimity over principle.

Despite the odds and despite the costs, we will not surrender to the forces of barbarism.

We have mobilized our efforts in Washington, Jerusalem, Europe, and at the U.N. to resist the calculated effort to expunge Israel’s rightful place in the history and community of nations. The proponents of these various resolutions have one goal in mind: The erasure of Jewish history and the Jewish people from the face of the earth.

We cannot let that happen.
