This is the latest installment of our year-end victories series looking back at some of the numerous victories by the ACLJ in 2019.

The ACLJ fights for life and religious freedom all across the world, and this year we celebrated a tremendous victory when a Christian woman was finally freed from a 10-year nightmare ordeal.

Asia Bibi, Christian mother of five, was sentenced to hang because she drank from the same water as a Muslim coworker. As a Christian she was considered unclean, and she was charged with baseless blasphemy charges. Asia was convicted under Pakistan’s archaic blasphemy laws and was sentenced to execution by hanging.

For more than four years, our legal team aggressively advocated for Asia Bibi’s freedom, engaging in a multi-pronged legal advocacy campaign across the globe.

We took Asia Bibi’s plight to the U.N. presenting multiple written and oral presentations, urging global intervention for her freedom. We even sent a legal letter directly to Pakistan, demanding her immediate release.

More than 800,000 people from more than 200 countries and territories worldwide signed our petition for her freedom.

Finally, the Supreme Court of Pakistan overturned her conviction and sentence, and earlier this year she was able to leave Pakistan and safely settle in a country that respects and protects her religious liberty.

Your support for the ACLJ’s advocacy efforts and your tireless prayers helped save an innocent Christian woman’s life, and that is something we should all celebrate.

We continue to work at the highest levels of government and at the U.N. to defend persecuted Christians around the globe.
