Articles of impeachment have been introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Today on Sekulow, we discussed the breaking news that an article of impeachment has been introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives. This is a brand-new presidential impeachment resolution that has over 200 sponsors.

So eight days before President-elect Biden is sworn into office, the House of Representatives has introduced an article of impeachment against President Trump. More sponsors will probably be added. My impression, unless something happens, that this article of impeachment will be acted on as early as tomorrow or Wednesday. They introduced this article of impeachment at the same time that there was an attempt for the House to pass a resolution demanding that the Vice President implement the 25th Amendment to the United States Constitution.

This is a very serious and somber day for the country, again. We have to look at this both from a political perspective and a legal perspective. I think the paramount perspective here is: What’s in the best interest of the country?

The events that took place last week at the Capitol were horrific. Let me be clear. That was not civil disobedience. That wasn’t civil protest. What took place on Capitol Hill was terrorism. It was domestic terrorism. Of course there were also a whole host of federal crimes involved: vandalism, destruction of property, life and limb of individuals threatened, people murdered, some have said insurrection. This is not comparable to a civil protest or acts of civil disobedience. For example, blocking the doorway and the entrance to the Capitol would be illegal but it wouldn’t have reached the level of insurrection. Now whether this meets those legal standards is not what we are delving into today. What we have to deal with today is the reality that this has now come upon our country, and we have to look at how this impeachment will work.

ACLJ Director of Government Affairs Thann Bennett made the following point:

So the process right now is the article of impeachment has been drafted and introduced in the House. The primary author was Congressman Cicilline. Obviously, it is Speaker Pelosi’s authorization that gets it introduced into the House. We have confirmation that it has indeed been dropped, as they call it, into the hopper, where you put new pieces of legislation that are being introduced. That has now happened. It really is up to the Speaker now, when she wants to call it up. She does not have to go through the Judiciary Committee. They can report that out and Chairman Nadler has said he is willing to do that. I’m hearing she is opening to considering it as soon as tomorrow, maybe as late as Wednesday.

There is already talk of holding the impeachment over – after the House passes it, which all signs point to that they will – until after President-elect Biden’s first 100 days. This would not be good for our country that desperately needs healing.

These are somber and serious times for our country. We all need to pray. Pray for peace. Pray for our country. Pray for our leaders, all of them, that they would have God’s wisdom. Let’s pray that God will bless and protect the United States of America.

The full broadcast is complete with much more discussion about this second impeachment, how it could proceed and potential constitutional issues in the Senate, and what this means for the United States of America.
