Radio Recap – Report: Democrat Support for Impeachment Slips

According to news reports, Democrat support for impeachment is slipping.

On today’s Jay Sekulow Live we discussed the Washington Post’s interesting reporting that as many as half a dozen Democrats may vote against impeachment.

The headline of the Washington Post article was: “House Democrats brace for some defections among moderates on impeachment of Trump”.

The initial reports were that there are two Democrat members of the House that are not going to vote in favor of impeachment. Then all the sudden that number became six. Then there’s someone saying it could as many as ten to twelve voting against impeachment.

Time does not seem to be on the Democrats’ side because the longer this goes on, it appears that the moderate members of the Democrat Caucus in the House are less inclined to vote for impeachment. The idea that there would be bipartisan opposition to impeachment is pretty significant.

ACLJ Executive Director Jordan Sekulow made the following point:

There’s going to be bipartisan opposition. The one bipartisan part of about this entire impeachment is that there will be House Democrats voting against the impeachment of President Donald Trump, along with Republicans, and House and Senate Democrats voting against the impeachment of President Trump along with Senate Republicans. The only votes for impeachment will come from Democrats but the bipartisan action will be Republicans and Democrats together.

Here’s Congressman Nadler in 1998 during the Clinton impeachment:

“There must never be a narrowly voted impeachment, or an impeachment substantially supported by one of our major political parties, and largely opposed by the other.”

That’s exactly what’s happening right now.

ACLJ Director of Government Affairs Thann Bennett’s analysis:

They’re heading to a very narrow impeachment. Look, we don’t have to go through all the numbers right now but they can only afford to lose eighteen members of their Party and still impeach the President. Jay, you mentioned there are two Democrats that have already said they oppose it. It’s Collin Peterson and Jeff Van Drew. I think they are the lucky ones here. They have already announced it so they are not going to get squeezed by Speaker Pelosi to the extent of the others.

I think if every member of the House voted their conscience, I don’t think there’s any chance that the President would be impeached. There’s going to be a lot of pressure on those thirty one Democrats who are in districts that supported Donald Trump. The more time that goes by, the more of these Democrats are going to defect. That’s a big big reason that they are rushing this vote.

Here’s the question, as support slips: Could there be a four to five vote margin of this passing?
