How will mainstream America respond to calls to defund the police?

On today’s Jay Sekulow Live we discussed the latest rallying cry of the radical Left, which is “defund the police”. As a policy matter, this is actually beginning to happen in places like New York and Los Angeles.

Newsflash to liberals across the country: we do not live in a utopia. We require law enforcement, security, and protection to keep us safe. We need that to keep our children safe. That doesn’t mean that at all times we’re always safe. That doesn’t mean there’s always enough law enforcement to keep everyone safe from every incident, bad actor, or criminal act. It also doesn’t mean that you give law enforcement a pass when there has been police abuse.

In instances like we’ve seen most recently in the George Floyd case, you don’t give law enforcement a pass when there is misconduct. The question is, what is the correct response?

Some of the radical groups that have been running the protests – which led to riots that have kind of calmed down back into protests – are pushing something that I feel like we’ve dealt with here at the ACLJ when it comes to Israel. They are saying let’s just divest from the police. Let’s defund the police. We don’t need police is what they are saying. Let me ask you this, do you want police in your neighborhood? How would you feel if Vice-President Biden started endorsing a message like that?

We’re starting to see how elected members of the Left are trying to dance around this defund the police move, which is moving forward in places like Minneapolis. They are starting that process there. In Los Angeles they are pulling $150 million dollars out of the police budget. That’s not going to add to more training on appropriate police actions. That’s going to take away from appropriate training methods.

We’re starting to see these leftist politicians say, well it needs to happen piece by piece, city by city. They are worried that if this becomes the defining message of 2020, instead of George Floyd and police brutality as something we need to deal with as a nation, that defunding the police is a very dangerous and absolutely losing political ideology.

Defunding the police makes no sense.

As my dad, ACLJ Chief Counsel Jay Sekulow, stated:

What happened with these police officers involved in this murder is a crime. It should be prosecuted. It should be rooted out and gotten out of police departments across the country. We should be in a situation where no citizen – and it is especially true within the African American community – should be subjected and treated like these police officers treated [George Floyd], and it’s not just what happened in Minneapolis. It’s been many other states. We’ve seen it over the history. That has to go. But the answer cannot be – it’s so simplistic – oh we’ll just dismantle the police department and then we’ll come up with something that may work. What’s that something? Well they really don’t know. Well maybe you should have the idea of what that’s going to be before you start dismantling public safety. Because the primary job of local government is community safety and well-being, and I think they’re making a serious mistake.
