United Nations

A

A

As we previously reported, on December 6, 2018, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) was poised to approve an historic resolution condemning the violent acts Hamas continues to perpetrate against Israel. This resolution was drafted by the United States and represented a long-overdue counterbalance to the litany of condemnations of Israel passed by the UNGA.

But just moments before the final vote, in a brazen parliamentary stunt, the UNGA adopted a resolution drafted by Kuwait that required a 2/3 supermajority for the U.S. resolution to be approved. This move was clearly hypocritical, as it came just a few days after the UNGA approved six resolutions condemning Israel using only a simple majority requirement.

We have already sent a detailed legal demand letter to the Secretary General of the United Nations outlining both the shocking failure of the U.N. to condemn Hamas for its violent acts and the ridiculous parliamentary stunt that held the U.S. resolution to a higher vote threshold than other similar resolutions. Our letter clearly articulates that both failures undermine the credibility of the United Nations.

We also promised you a full accounting of how the rest of the world voted on this important matter. Countries who did not stand with the United States on this fundamental issue should be required to give an accounting for their actions.

First, the following countries either supported Kuwait’s ridiculous proposal requiring the U.S. resolution garner a 2/3 majority for passage, or they abstained (A) and effectively aided in its passage:

Next, the following countries either opposed the U.S. resolution and thereby refused to condemn Hamas for its violent acts against Israel, or abstained (A) from voting on the U.S. resolution and demonstrated a troubling lack of courage to condemn Hamas for its egregious violations:

Every one of these countries should be called to account for these votes. But it may be particularly important to scrutinize the actions of countries that voted in favor of the U.S. resolution while at the same time enabling its defeat by supporting or abstaining on the Kuwait resolution. These countries should be made to understand they cannot have it both ways. They were either duped or, more likely, willing participants in this charade. Those countries are listed below:

Argentina (Y)
Bahamas (Y)
Belize (Y)
Brazil (Y)
Cabo Verde (A)
Chile (A)
Cost Rica (A)
Fiji (A)
Guatemala (Y)
Iceland (A)
Jamaica (A)
Liechtenstein (A)
New Zealand (A)
Norway (A)
Palau (A)
Switzerland (A)

At the ACLJ, we are committed to providing you with hard facts that cut through the narrative too often told by the U.N. We call on the countries listed above to account for their actions, and to move into a posture that supports peace and clearly condemns the violence perpetrated by Hamas and other terrorist organizations.
